Woodlands
Biddle Combe
This valley is one of our favourite walks out from Wells up to one of the highest spots on the Mendip Hills. Sometimes tricky underfoot you are rewarded with beautiful spring flowers.
Beacon Hill
The Woodland Trust's Beacon Hill site is on the ridge of Mendip highway in the east of Mendip. The numerous beech trees create golden autumn colours as the morning light shines through the south facing slopes of the wood.
Ebbor Gorge
Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve is a wooded site cut by two valleys. Its woodland glades are ideal for ferns, fungi and wild flowers - but it is best visited for its autumn colour.
Long Wood
Long Wood is an ancient woodland valley high up in the Mendip Hills. In spring there are spectacular carpets of bluebells and wild garlic. Just outside the wood is a bank rich in orchids.
King's Castle Wood
Bluebells in the recently cleared hazel coppice, and paths through autumn colours up to the an ancient iron age hill fort on the outskirts of Wells.
Park Wood
Being so close to my home this wood has recently become my favourite early morning spring-time walk to find Wood Anemones and Bluebells.
Stockhill Wood
A favourite with families this large Forestry Commission plantation is well known for its Nightjars and Long-eared Owls.
Somerset Woodlands
Scattered across Somerset are many other pockets of woodland which provide year round interest and colour.
